Mini Review: The Maze: Three Tales of the Future by Charity Tahmaseb

Author: Charity Tahmaseb
Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction
Publisher: Collins Mark Books
Publication: July 19, 2014

Three stories. Three heroines. Three choices.

The Maze: Cadet Eppie Langtry navigates the cold and endless maze as part of the Academy's final training exercise. Her exploration leads her to a fellow cadet, and their combined curiosity triggers something no one expects--least of all the cadre running the maze.

What Little Remains: In a post-apocalyptic city, Kit ekes out an existence by tending to her rooftop garden. A rift in time brings her a new friend from the past--and something else far more menacing.

Inside Out: When Lexia befriends a girl from outside a luxury spa facility, she starts seeing the cracks in her mother's disastrous fifth marriage, the world in which she lives, and her own future.

Mini Review
The Maze: Three Tales of the Future is a book I picked up on a whim one day while scouring Amazon for something quick yet interesting to read. I don't usually go for short story anthologies but the stories contained within The Maze piqued my curiosity enough that I knew I had to try it out. Well, I can honestly say I am so glad that I did. The Maze: Three Tales of the Future had some of the best speculative fiction in it that I've read. Each story was unique and left me wanting more.

The Maze: At first I was a bit confused by this story but the further I read, the clearer the scenario became. I won't go into much detail beyond that but I loved the twist at the end, I didn't see it coming at all.

What Little Remains:  This story was unique because the main character was merely a bystander to what was going on.  In fact, had she not been tending to a garden rooftop she probably would be none the wiser to those portals or the people using them. I really could see this story being longer. It would be great to see the perspectives of those on the other end.

Inside Out: This one was probably my favorite out of the bunch. I can't really describe the story without giving away the twist but it definitely had an The Island meets the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld vibe going on. Again, great story with great characters.

Overall,  The Maze: Three Tales of the Future is undoubtedly one of my reading highlights this year. I sincerely hope the Author decides to make each of these shorts into full length novels. Yes, they were that good! I highly recommend picking this Novella up and giving it a go.

With that being said, I'll be rating The Maze: Three Tales of the Future by Charity Tahmaseb  ★★★★★.

Charity Tahmaseb has slung corn on the cob for Green Giant and jumped out of airplanes (but not at the same time). She doesn’t think it’s a social stigma to eat alone at a restaurant and read a book. Her favorite city is London, but she loves living in Minnesota.

She spent twelve years as a Girl Scout and six in the Army; that she wore a green uniform for both may not be a coincidence. These days, she writes young adult fiction and works as a technical writer for a software company in St. Paul.

  1. Oh wow this sounds really great - especially the one mentioning The Uglies which is one of my fav series! I also love that cover and it IS very Uglies-like (their new covers). I don't read short stories that often though but if they do get written into full novels it's def be right up my alley!

  2. I'm not generally a short story person either, but these ones sound intriguing! I recently discovered I really haven't read much dystopian fiction, and I'd like to read more; three short stories would be perfect. Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by my blog!
