Armchair BEA- Blogger Development & Genre Fiction

Blogger Development

It's funny when I started blogging I had clear cut goals in mind for what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to focus mainly on reviews with the occasional promotional post here and there. However, that didn't last long. While I don't get paid to blog and am by no means a professional I definitely feel that my relationship with  my blog has transformed from being just a hobby. I get antsy if I don't have at least a new post daily and continue to push myself to become a better blogger. One of the things I've always struggled with is contacting authors for interviews. I really feel awkward doing so. I have really tried to overcome that fear and have had some very nice responses from Authors which has helped motivate me even more. Another thing that has greatly changed from my beginning days of Blogging is my ability to reject a review request. I always felt like I had to accept every one that came across my path. Now I know I can reject without feeling like I'm ruining a contact by doing so.

Genre Fiction

I've always been the type to read whatever strikes my fancy be it Fantasy, Historical Fiction, True Crime etc but I do certainly have Genres that I prefer more than others. My favorite Genre hands down is Horror. I have a shelf full of horror books (especially Zombie Horror) and it was one of my very first Genres I latched onto as a young reader.  In fact It by Stephen King was one of my first Horror books and I was no more than 8 or 9 when I read it. However, I  do find this Genre gets the least love amongst the blogging community and that makes me sad. I don't know why it turns some people off but it does. Even when I  review horror it seems those books get less views then others.  I guess it just takes a certain reader to understand that it's not just all about the scare and gore. These books usually have great character development and world building as well.

I also really love Historical Fiction. I don't get around to it as much as I used to but I still really love the Genre. There is something comforting about getting to read about a time period that  has already happened. Being far removed from the event it still feels fresh and new yet it also has sparked my interest in subjects I might not know as much about.

On the flipside I tend to stay away from some Genres. While blogging has changed the way I look at certain aspects in books (Romance specifically) I can only take so much before I come down with a severe case of eyerollitis.  I don't tend to find Chick Lit enjoyable and I really don't enjoy Contemporary books either. That's not to say I haven't read either or I've sworn them off completely but books in those genres really need to wow me if I'm going to take a chance on reading them.

Do you have certain genres you read more than others? Do you have some you won't touch at all?

Leave your answers in the comments below! Have a link to your response share that as well so I can take a look.

  1. I love horror! Although I have to admit Stephen Kings It freaked me right out. I still find clowns freaky. I am a new follower, hope I can find some new reads.

    1. It the book was scary enough in itself. When I saw the movie though that is what really truly scared me. It's been well over 20 years since I first saw the film and it still scares me to this day.

    1. I find it's much easier if I've had some sort of interaction with them previously (through Facebook or twitter) it's when they don't know me from Adam that it becomes intimidating.

  3. I haven't read a horror novel in years, although I think I'm going to try one of Joe Hill's books as I hear they are quite good.

I'm also a big fan of historical fiction and fantasy. They are actually my favourite genres to read in. I'm kind of all over the place in terms of what I'll read, but I do stay away from romance as it's just not my thing.

    1. Yeah I don't enjoy pure romance either which is why I'm leery of to much of it in books.
