Booking Through Thursday (35) Person Preference and Moving

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly bookish meme where participants are asked a series of questions about their reading habits. To join this or future Booking Through Thursdays Click Here.

Since I missed last week's question I'll be answering that below as well.

This Week BTT Asks:
Do you have a preference between “person” in the books you read?
Do you prefer third-person to first-person? Or don’t you care? And … why??

Done right, First Person can be very entertaining to read and I actually really enjoy it. However, I certainly feel third-person perspective is most favored amongst writers and certainly easiest to follow. As for my preference it depends on the book itself. I wouldn't say I favor one over the other because each book can bring something different to the table depending on whose narrating.

Last Week BTT Asks:
Have you ever had to move your books?
Did having to pack and move your books cause any changes in your book-collecting habits?

I've had to move books plenty of times through the years and while it's a big pain in the ass I couldn't see not doing it. One of the I guess you could say hardest moves was coming back from Hawaii. Almost 1/2 of our household boxes were books and when I found out I might need to leave some behind due to weight restrictions I was heartbroken.  So, I did what any book loving girl would do and I donated most of my massive shoe/clothing collection and also decided to give away some furniture as well so I didn't have to choose which books to leave behind.  Of course it was just my luck that just a few years later I'd lose half of those books during another move when the storage unit our stuff was in flooded during a very bad rain storm.
Which is partly why my husband bought me an E-reader in the first place.  Even if my Kindle breaks all my books stay in the cloud and I can just re-download them as needed. At first I was reluctant to buy E-books but during the past 2 years of ownership  I've noticed a definite shift in buying habits. I find myself acquiring more and more books on the E-reader instead of owning each and every copy in paper or hardback.  I still buy plenty the old fashioned way but I tend to reserve buying physically for books I really loved instead of each and every book that comes my way.  I also have to admit having an E-reader does help when it comes to moving since I don't have to lug box after box of books and it also helps when it comes to putting them back on shelves as well. What used to take me a full day now can be done in a few short hours.  So while I didn't choose an E-reader due to moving my massive collection it certainly has helped.

Now for my questions:
Do you have a "person" preference?
Have you ever had to move your collection of books?
If so, was the experience good or bad?

Leave me your answers in the comments below. I love reading your responses!

  1. I don't have a preference when it comes to perspective, as long as it reads well. The only time it bugs me is when there are multiple third person POVs in a book...it just feels cluttered to me, and it makes it more difficult to keep track of everyone.

I haven't had to move since I amassed my collection of books. I mean, we moved to our house two years ago, but I probably only owned about 100 books at the time, which is only a small percentage of what I own now. I might actually be able to talk my husband into hiring movers if we ever decided to move again...book boxes are HEAVY. :P
