Civilization as we know it ended more than fifteen years ago, leaving as it's legacy barren wastelands called the Deadland and a new terror for the humans who survived- hordes of undead Biters.

Fifteen year-old Alice has spent her entire life in the Deadland, her education consisting of how best to use guns and knives in the ongoing war for survival against the Biters. One day, Alice spots a Biter disappearing into a hole in the ground and follows it, in search of fabled underground Biter bases.

What Alice discovers there propels her into an action-packed adventure that changes her life and that of all humans in the Deadland forever. An adventure where she learns the terrible conspiracy behind the ruin of humanity, the truth behind the origin of the Biters, and the prophecy the mysterious Biter Queen believes Alice is destined to fulfill.

A prophecy based on the charred remains of the last book in the Deadland- a book called Alice in Wonderland.

Wow is all I can say about this book. The story was such a refreshing take on your standard zombie fare. Alice in Wonderland is certainly one of the most recognizable books in the world and this is why the title originally caught my eye. I thought I misread at first until a second glance told meI had seen it right. From the very first page I was hooked into Alice's world. The Author blends iconic characters from the original book into this post apocalyptic world seamlessly. It doesn't follow Alice in Wonderland exactly (which is good)but blends the best parts with the sadness and sorrow of living in a world destroyed by a Zombie Apocalypse, fallout from Nuclear attacks and the crumbled remains of a once civilized Democratic society.

Alice our Heroine is a girl who was born months following The Rising all she has ever known is Biters bad (Zombies are called Biters), survival Good. While most little girls grow up playing with dolls, skipping rope and fantasizing about finding a prince to sweep her away all Alice has ever known is Guns, tactics and surviving above all else. She lives in a small FREE community with her father, mother and sister (who is 10 years older). One day on a routine sweep she spots a biter wearing rabbit ears who vanishes from her sight in the blink of an eye. Ever curious Alice follows him down the "rabbit" hole and this is where the story takes off. Alice is thrust into a world where up is down and what was once right might be wrong. The Author paints the Biters in such a way that by the end your rooting for them as well as the surviving humans. I sincerely hope the author chooses to make a follow up book. I want to see what happens. Overall I really did enjoy this book. I'm giving it 4 ★★★★
