Book To Movie Monday (6)

For this weeks Book to Movie Monday I have decided to cover the movie Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone. I love this Book series and I equally love the Movie Series, but I have never really sat down and compared how the two matched up.

First let's discuss the Book. Below is the Cover:

Now for a little back story in case some of you aren't familiar with the Novel. Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone is written by Author J.K. Rowling and was released on June 30, 1997. J.K. Rowling began writing Harry Potter back in 1990, it took her six years to complete. Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone had an initial run of only 500 books. In the UK the Book is titled Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. Jo, has stated several times that she wished US copies had the same title but wasn't in the position to demand it stay the same at the time of release.

Let's look at some of the characters now shall we.

Main Protagonist

Harry Potter- Orphaned as a baby, Harry is an 11 year old boy living with his cruel Aunt and Uncle. He has a lighting shaped scar on his forehead leftover from the night his parents died. He is forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs even though the Dursleys have a perfectly fine spare bedroom. One day he receives a letter inviting him to attend school at Hogwarts, though before he can read further his Uncle snatches the letter from him forbidding him from attending. The Letters keep coming though much to the annoyance of the Dursleys. Eventually Harry is whisked away to Hogwarts by Hagrid the schools game keeper. Thus the tale of Harry Potter is born.

Hermione Granger- On her way to Hogwarts Hermione meets Ron and Harry. She constantly annoys her peers with her vast knowledge. After saving her from a troll that escapes the dungeons she Harry and Ron become tight friends. We also learn that both her parents are non magical and that they are in fact dentists.

Ronald Weasley- One of seven children, Ronald Weasley belongs to a pure blood (pure magic) family. He meets Harry as they are about to board a train bound for Hogwarts. The pair become fast friends. Eventually they add a 3rd member to their group in Hermione Granger after saving her from an escaped troll.

Main Supporting Characters

Albus Dumbledore- Headmaster of Hogwarts. He initially delivered Harry to the Dursleys after his parents died. He saves Harry in more ways then one and becomes a trusted Ally.

Severus Snape- Potions Master, He has a strong dislike for Harry. It is said he covets teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts. He is also head of Slytherin House.

Professor McGonagall- Head of Gryffindor House Professor McGonagall is a strong but severe woman. She also teaches Transfiguration and can turn herself into a cat. She is a close friend to Professor Dumbledore.

Draco Malfoy- A first year student like Harry, he belongs to Slytherin house. His parents were big supporters of Voldemort but after his disappearance switched sides. He also has strong views about Half-bloods like Hermione and tries to get Harry and his friends in trouble every moment he gets.

Professor Quirrel- Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. Reportedly after an incident with a Vampire his nerves were shattered. Which explains his stammering and nervousness. Quirrel wears a turban at all times to conceal the fact that he is voluntarily possessed by Voldemort.

Voldemort- Responsible for the murder of Harry's parents, James and Lily, he unsuccessfully tries to murder Harry as well but his plan backfires. Due to Lily's sacrifice to save her son Voldemort is disembodied, and Harry carries a mysterious scar on his forehead as a result. Voldermort tries to regain his body by latching onto Quirrel's head and using the Sorcerer's stone hidden deep within Hogwarts but ultimately is foiled by Harry.

Overall while I highly enjoy the Movie, you just cannot beat the book. While I know that things were cut due to a long run time, some scenes would of just added a bit more to the movie that I felt it was lacking. Overall great movie, great book you should definitely check out both if you haven't already.

Well that about wraps up this weeks Book to Movie Monday. I don't think the book ever had a trailer but I'll post the movie one down below in case your curious. Leave a Comment down below telling me which you liked better and why. Have a recommend for an upcoming Book to Movie let me know that as well.
