Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

First off lets get the technicalities out of the way. I was given this book as an ARC through Netgalley to review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for them.

That being said here is my review:

The year is 1485 and Ismae a young girl from Brittany has suffered a cruel, cold life. Told since birth she was not wanted, Ismae begrudgingly accepts her lot in life. That is until the day she learns that she is so much more then just the unwanted offspring of Peasants. Given a chance at a new beginning with the nuns at the Convent of St. Mortain, Ismae is happy for the first time in her life. Trained by the nuns to become an assassin, Ismae spends the next few years perfecting her skills. Finally Ismae is called to action and her first assignment protecting the young duchess Anne of Brittany. To do that Ismae will have to leave the comfort and safety of the convent and enter the scheming, glamorous life of Court. Will she succeed in her mission? Well your just going to have to read and find out for yourself afterall..... “When one consorts with assassins, one must expect to dance along the edge of a knife once or twice.”

I absolutely loved this book!! It had the perfect blend of History, Romance, Intrigue, and of course Death. The implements Ismae uses to accomplish her goals are pretty creative and left me wanting to see and learn more. Watching Ismae grow from this broken young girl to a strong, cunning and independent Woman was certainly a high point. I cannot express how much I am looking forward to the next in the series. I know that on release day I will be adding a copy of this to my shelf.

The plot was fast paced and thrilling from page 1 right to the end. The imagery was perfectly detailed and I could clearly picture in my mind the court, countryside and the characters. I found no flaws in the writing at all and could tell that the Author spent a good amount of time researching life during those years. Overall I highly recommend you pick this one up. I am giving this book 5 ★★★★★
