Book To Movie Monday (13)

For this weeks Book to Movie Monday I have decided to cover the movie Carrie (1976).

First Let's Discuss The Book, Below Is The Cover:

Now for a little back story in case some of you aren't familiar with the novel. Carrie was written by the Author Stephen King and was released April 5,1974 by Doubleday. Carrie was Stephen King's fourth book but the first to actually be published. The Book is loosely based on Cinderella. The Hardback of Carrie only sold 13,000 copies but the paperback was a huge success selling over 1 million copies in it's 1st year.

Let's look at some of the characters in the book.

Main Protagonist

Carrie White- Carrie is a shy, lonely 17 year old girl with a Christian Fundamentalist mother who abuses more than loves her. Carrie's telekinetic powers are presents throughout her life but only really manifest after an incident in the shower involving her 1st period. Carrie starts to rebel against her mother and is even asked to prom. Unfortunately the "cool" kids don't let her be and play a cruel prank on her, this incident is all Carrie can handle and she proceeds to burn down the town in revenge.

Other Noteworthy Characters

Sue Snell- Carries only "friend" after participating in a cruel prank on Carrie, she sets Carrie up with her boyfriend Tommy as a way to ease her conscience and also help the wildly unpopular Carrie fit in.

Tommy Ross- Sue's boyfriend, he is asked to take Carrie to prom and hesitantly agrees. He falls in love with Carrie but tragically dies after a bucket used to play a trick on Carrie smashes over his head fracturing his skull.

Rita Desjardin- Carrie's gym coach. Until the incident in the showers she felt the same disgust towards Carrie as the Students. She finally takes a stand about the bullying and indirectly causes the Death's at the prom by banning one of the students from attending.

Main Antagonist

Chris Hargensen- Popular and beautiful Chris has everything she ever wants but when that's not enough she takes pleasure in tormenting Carrie and other unpopular classmates whom she labels "Mortimer Snerds". After finally being caught and punished she is banned from prom. Chris sets in motion the events that ultimately lead to the deaths of most of the town.

Major Differences Between The Book and The Movie

In the Book When Carrie kills her mother she uses her Telekinesis to stop her mother's heart.
vs.
In the Movie she kills her mother with a bunch of knives crucifying her.

In the Book Carrie is slightly overweight with pimples on her neck and face.
vs.
In the Movie Carrie is long and gangly, with clear skin and straight hair.

In the Book Carrie is gifted with Telepathy and can broadcast her thoughts.
vs.
In the Movie I believe this is never mentioned.

In the Book after the incident at the prom she goes straight home to talk to her mother.
vs.
In the Movie she takes a bath first to wash the pigs blood off.

In the Book after Carrie and Tommy drench Carrie in pigs blood Chris and Bobby take off.
vs.
In the Movie Chris and Bobby stay at the prom watching Carrie wreak havoc through a window.

In the Book Carrie only burns down the gym.
vs.
In the Movie Carrie burns down the gym, her neighborhood and a large chunk of the town.

In the Book we last hear about a woman writing a letter about her niece developing Telekinesis.
vs.
In the Movie this is never mentioned.

In the Book Chris and Bobby are celebrating by having sex at the roadhouse when another student mentions Carries rampage.
vs.
In the Movie after Carrie leaves prom Chris and Bobby try to run over Carrie, instead she flips the car over killing the pair inside.

The Clear Winner in this week's Book Vs Movie is definitely the Book. While I love Sissy Spacek as Carrie, I just liked the progression of events better in the book. Plus the original ending was badass.

Well that about wraps up this weeks Book to Movie Monday. I'll post the movie trailer down below in case you want to check it out. Leave a Comment down below telling me which you liked better and why. Have a recommend for an upcoming Book to Movie let me know that as well.

*Btw here's a fun fact. This was John Travolta's first role. Ten Points if you can tell me who he played. No Cheating!!
