From Page To Screen (56) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

For this weeks From Page to Screen I have decided to cover Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling.

First let's discuss the book.
Here's a bit of back story in case some of you aren't familiar with the novel. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a novel written by Author J.K. Rowling. The book was originally released July 8, 2000 by Scholastic books (Bloomsbury in the UK). Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire follows Harry as he enters his 4th Year at Hogwarts. Upon release the book was met with mainly positive reviews selling over 3 million copies in its release weekend alone. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is also the first and only book in the series to win a Hugo Award.
Fun Fact: Early copies of the book have an error in them where James comes out of Voldemort's wand first. As you know this should've been Lily since she was last to die. Though it has been corrected in later editions it is still fun to see that even major Authors can make mistakes sometimes.

Let's take a look at some of the characters now, shall we.

Harry Potter- A 14 year old boy in his 4th year at Hogwarts. Even though Harry was famous before he even knew he was a wizard, He steers clear of special treatment, flattery, and praise. Harry strives to live a normal wizard's life even amongst the chaos his life as The Boy Who Lived brings. Harry is very loyal to Dumbledore and also his friends. He also is courageous which sometimes leads him into difficult situations.

Ron Weasley- Ron is the youngest brother of the Weasley clan. Although Ron grew up poor he was deeply loved by his family. However his poverty is a source of contention and he is prone to outbursts of anger when teased about his tattered robes and hand me downs. Ron is a pure blood but doesn't let that status go to his head. Like Harry Ron is also very loyal to his friends and family.

Hermione Granger- Hermione is a Muggle born wizard despite this she is top of her class at Hogwarts. Hermione is very self confident and loves to learn. While Hermione doesn't always approve Ron and Harry's actions she always stands by them out of love and loyalty.

Mad-Eye Moody-  An eccentric yet skilled retired Auror (dark-wizard catcher) who comes to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Mad-Eye is deeply wary of anyone who could be a Dark wizard, and he drinks only from his hip flask.

Bartemius Crouch -  The stiff and rule-abiding Head of the Department for International Magical Cooperation. He once sent his own son to Azkaban after finding out he was in cahoots with Voldemort.

Bartemius Crouch, Jr. -  Mr. Crouch's son and also convicted Death Eater. He is a loyal supporter of Voldemort. After escaping confinement he comes to Hogwarts disguised as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Professor Moody.

Now let's discuss the movie.
In case some of you aren't familiar with the film, here is a bit of back story. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was directed by Mike Newell and was released November 18, 2005 by Warner Bros. Pictures. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire cost $150 million to make and went on to earn $896 worldwide. The film opened to widespread acclaim and was the most successful film worldwide that year. Fun Fact: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire holds the record of Fastest Selling DVD of all time. The film sold at a rate of six copies per second on release day. That's a whole lot of DVD's.

Major Differences Between The Book Film
BookFilm
Rita Skeeter is an unregistered Animagus. She uses her skill to eavesdrop on people that she wants to write about. This is omitted.
Fred, George and Lee Jordan take an aging potion to try and trick the Goblet. Only Fred and George take the aging potion. When it doesn't work they get into a fight with each other.

Harry sees Voldemort and Wormtail discussing their plans in his dreams. Harry see Voldemort, Wormtail and Barty Crouch Jr. in his dreams.
Harry writes to Sirius about his nightmare and his scar hurting while still at the Dursley's. Harry doesn't write to Sirius until after World Cup at Hermione's insistence. They are already back at school. We do not see the Dursley's at all.
During the Tournament the Dark Mark is cast by an unknown person to scare away the Death Eaters and to shame them for their disloyalty. We know it is Barty Crouch Jr. who casts the Dark Mark. It is cast to let everyone know it is the Death Eaters who are responsible for the destruction.
There is no indication of any sort that Moody is indeed Barty Crouch Jr. He has a tick where he flicks his tongue out like a snake which the Elder Crouch recognizes.
Everyone except Ron throw there support behind Harry being in the Tournament. Most of Gryffindor house is angry about Harry being in the tournament. Only Neville and Hermione stand by his side at first.
During the first task Harry uses his flying skill to retrieve the egg. Harry lures the dragon out of the arena and chases him around the grounds. After the dragon smashes into a bridge Harry goes back to retrieve the egg.
Harry watches Barty Crouch Sr. send his son to Azkaban through the pensieve. Even though his son begs him not to Barty Crouch Sr. does not hesitate in sending him away. The scene is reversed and Barty Crouch Jr. is proud to be considered a follower of Voldemort. Barty Crouch Sr. is devastated at the thought of his son being sent away to Azkaban.
Dobby gives Harry the Gillyweed to complete his second task.Neville gives Harry the Gillyweed.
Harry is told to go to the Quidditch stadium to prepare for his third task. Mad Eye Moody helps Harry with his third task.
Crouch Sr. has much more back story in the book. Sirius tells Harry, Ron and Hermione how he led people to take a stand against Voldemort. Minus sending his son to Azkaban his personal life is barely mentioned.
When Voldemort is brought back to life he is naked and has red eyes.  When Voldemort is brought back to life he is wearing robes already and has piercing blue eyes.
When they are in the maze Krum casts Crucio on Cedric. Krum casts Stupefy on Cedric.
The Maze is filled with many magical creatures who try and stop the contestants from reaching the cup thus winning the tournament. The Maze itself attacks the contestants.
When Harry and Cedric are ported to the Graveyard Harry asks Cedric where they are. This is reversed.

The above mentioned are the major changes I noticed when the book was taken From Page to Screen. Now I know I'm missing things like the entirety of the games being omitted, Harry and Ron supporting Ireland vs. Bulgaria and Harry seeing 3 trials of Death eaters in the penseive not just 1 but if I was to list them all this post would be triple the length it is so I chose to focus on what I felt really was noticeable. Which however do I prefer? This one was a toughie because I love both equally but when it really comes down to it the book wins this battle. While I know the director really tried to fit everything in the film this book really should've been split into two. I just feel if it had it'd been a bit better and not as rushed feeling. Definitely check out both if you haven't already especially if you want a glimpse of Robert Pattinson pre Edward Cullen.

Still not convinced? Check out the trailer below!

  2. Part of the reason is they tried to condense such a long book into a single film. Also yes, you need to watch these and become addicted!!
