Movie Recommendation Monday (3) The Winter Olympic Edition

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi are in full swing so naturally that means it is time for another Movie Recommendation Monday! This week all my recommendations will be based on movies taking place around or during the Winter Olympics. These movies range from the silly to the serious but all of them embody the Olympic spirit and what it means to be an Olympian representing your Country in the games.

Cool Runnings is a 1993 sports movie which stars most notably John Candy as disgraced bobsledder turned coach Irv Blitzer. When top Jamaican athlete Derice Bannock fails to qualify for the Summer Olympics he enlists the help of Irv Blitzer as well as several other top Jamaican Athletes to create Jamaica's very first Bobsled team. Cool Runnings is loosely based on the true story of the Jamaica national bobsled team's debut in the bobsled competition of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Blades of Glory is a 2007 Comedy starring Will Ferrel & Jon Heder as Figure Skating's first male pairs skaters. At the 2002 World Winter Sport Games, rival men's skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell), a skillful skater but raunchy sex addict, and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder), Figure Skating's golden boy, tie for gold. On the podium an argument ensues, which develops into a fight. As a result they are stripped of their medals and banned for life from men's singles competition. However thanks to Jimmy's obsessive stalker Hector, Jimmy learns of a loophole in the ban allowing him to compete in pairs skating but first he needs to find a partner.

With the next Olympics rapidly approaching her coach, Anton Pamchenko needs to find another replacement this time an Outsider to the sport. He proceeds to track down Doug, whose found working in a steel mill, living with his brother and playing in a semi-professional hockey league on the side. Desperate for another chance at Olympic glory, Doug agrees to work as Kate's partner despite not liking her very much and knowing next to nothing about Figure skating.

  1. Gah, I love Blades of Glory. Such a stupid movie, but I love it nonetheless. Also, The Cutting Edge...haven't seen that movie in forever, but Being Sloane Jacobs reminded me of it a lot. :)
