Northern Canada, the not too distant future, it's December. A massive blizzard has blanketed most of North American in layers of deep white snow, disrupting communication, travel, and deliveries. In the oil town of Fort McMurray, Alberta power is disrupted and all cell phone communication ceases. The RCMP declares a state of emergency and begins evacuating the city. Harsh weather and mass panic results in accidents and injuries all over the city. Recent reports of violent and brutal attacks committed seemingly at random had been reported all over the world. RCMP officers all over Fort McMurray are attacked by gangs of these psychos, abandoned oil sites become infernos and the loss of life is unimaginable. In a small downtown apartment a young man will awaken into this hell on earth, alone and disconnected. Unaware of what has occurred he will do his best to make sense of what has become of his small part of the world. Learning things from the people he meets and wondering what has become of those he loves and cares for. Follow Roland Castle as he battles a blizzard, the walking dead in the first thrilling book of the Dead Cold Trilogy.
I purchased this book from Amazon. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for them. Review: First things first, I really dislike this book cover. I was immediately put off by how unprofessional it looks but decided to download the book anyway and give it a shot. That being said I don't mind self published books but a bad cover can really make or break if I buy it or not. Well let me tell you that I am so glad that I didn't let my cover snobbery derail me because I really enjoyed this book. Dead Cold follows the story of a man named Roland who wakes up to find out that while passed out the world has gone to hell, their is a blizzard outside and Oh yeah the dead now walk the earth. Dead Cold was a fun journey with great world building, strong character driven plot and above all the characters made realistic decisions while trying to survive. The only real flaw I had with the book itself was the small amount of spelling mistakes that sometimes stopped the story Dead Cold (no pun intended) while you had to go back and reread the sentence. Final Thoughts If you like action mixed with a little bit of romance and surrealism then definitely give Dead Cold a shot. Again it does have a few small spelling mistakes so take that into consideration but if you can look past them then this if a very good start to the series. After the OMG ending I am waiting in anticipation for Book 2! I will be giving Dead Cold by Roddy Cross ★★★★. |
*edit- Since this review Dead Cold has received a new cover. You can see the new shiny cover by clicking Here.

This book sounds like a lot of fun! I liked your thoughtful and balanced review. Like you, bad covers can put me off, and I'm a bit of a snob about self-pubbed stuff, too. But I'm glad that you took a chance and it worked out. I'm a Horror writer and this book sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the info! :-)
ReplyDeleteI really liked it just needs a teeny bit of polishing to make it just that little bit better.
DeleteI do apologise for the cover but on a new parent's budget I couldn't afford a proper one, the same problem with editing as I did everything myself. Not the best idea I know but the only available option. I would like to thank you for the excellent review of my book :) it was refreshing to see. As for the spelling errors if you remember where they were I would be glad to fix them and send you a signed paperback. Thanks again.
