Booking Through Thursday (20)

BTT Asks: Do you feel sad that so many people seem content to go through their lives without stretching their mental wings at all?

Can you imagine NOT being a Reader? How does it shape your life? Your perception of it?

How does being a Reader affect your relationship with all those folks who are looking at it from the other side and simply can’t understand how you can sit and READ all the time?

This was an excellent series of questions this week that really made me think before answering.

Yes, I do feel sad that some people don't read. I've always been a passionate reader from the time I was very young. My mother would take me to the library several times a week and as I grew I could always be found curled up with a book somewhere. Many times I'd hear people say they didn't understand how I could read all day. In all honesty I'd be lost in a sense without reading in my life and it makes me sad to this day thinking people are missing out on that experience.

I do understand some people aren't readers and have had bad experiences in school where they were forced to read a book they hated over and over. Sometimes it just takes the right title to get them to start up again and find that passion. Then on the other hand you have others who stubbornly refuse no matter how much you try. Some people are simply not readers.

As for the last part of the question, I don't think I know many people who flat out refuse to read but I do have a few family members who might not understand my book obsession. Does it affect my relationship? Not entirely, but having passions in common certainly wouldn't hurt.

Overall I simply believe reading a book to be the biggest pleasure in life. I couldn't imagine a life without them and I will never stop trying to convince others to do the same even if only a casually.

Now for my questions, Do you feel some people are just not readers or Are you convinced they just haven't found the right book yet? If you weren't a reader what would be your passion? Leave me an answer in the comments below, I love reading your responses!

  1. I like your answer. I think sometimes the reason people don't like to read is because of some of the required reading forced on us at school. I think there is a genre out there for everyone. I know if I had to read just one genre of books I would become very bored, so I say find what interests you and enjoy your reading experience.

    1. I know I had to read Alive so many times that I now have a distinct dislike of the book so I can see how that might transfer over to disliking all books in general especially if you weren't a big reader to begin with.

  2. Yes, I agree that "forced" reading sometimes turns kids off...but finding something to ignite the love all over again just might be the solution.

Sometimes, in younger people, I think reading is competing with all the fancy technological gadgets available. When I was young, even TVs were not yet a part of our reality. Later, by the time we had one, reading was an entrenched part of my life.

I do have a passion for movies...they provide similar experiences as reading, in that they transport us to other kinds of realities (or magic).

    1. Next to reading, movies are by far my biggest passion. I can agree about Technology getting in the way at times but that's what sorta makes E-readers brilliant for kids. Even though I prefer physical books, I know my kids have no problem reading them electronically and whatever gets someone reading is better than them not doing it at all.

  3. I'm a firm believer that there's a book for everyone...they just have to find it. I mean, my sister wasn't a big reader AT ALL, but then I begged her to give The Hunger Games a try, and it took her maybe two days to finish. Then she wanted to borrow the rest of the series. :)

If I weren't a reader, I'd spend more time on photography. I actually used to take a gazillion photos, but when I renewed my love of reading, that sorta dropped off.

  4. Reading should start in the home, and let kids get interested in something they would like to read.

  6. I don't know what my passion would be. I mean I balance my reading with my family and life, so I don't know what would replace it, if it wasn't there. That's a good question!
