It didn’t take long for the world to die. And it didn’t take long, either, for the dead to rise.

Born on the day everything ended, a world filled with the walking dead is the only one that Aaron knows. Kept in seclusion, his family teaches him the basics. How to read and write. How to survive.

Then Aaron makes a shocking discovery. The undead, who desire nothing but flesh, ignore him. It’s as if he’s invisible to them.

The survivors of the old suburb of Lexington call a high school their home. They live day to day, without any of the luxuries mankind used to enjoy. Samantha is a product of the new world. Alone, cold, looking out only for herself. She and the other residents of Lexington feel their hope dwindling. They need change. They need someone who can face the corpses. They need someone who can live in a city of the dead.

They need Aaron.

Review
Dead Living kicks off right at the beginning of the Zombie outbreak. As expected things spiral out of control and due to sheer luck and fast thinking a small group of survivors make it out of the city alive. Flash forward 14 years and the group is still alive now living in the woods miles outside the city. Unfortunately for Aaron and his family luck is about to run out. 6 years later the lone survivor of the group Aaron is living in Baltimore in a city filled with the dead. Which is where the story kicks off.

I loved this book! Simply put everything worked. I loved the character Aaron. You'd expect him to be an angry young man based on how his life turned out but he was the complete opposite. Aaron was like a bright light of happiness in a world that was anything but. His enthusiasm for life was infectious and you couldn't help smiling along with him. Sam was also a great character. She is a true survivor and I loved that she could kick some serious ass. Even the minor characters were great in Dead Living. I loved the citizens of Lexington High. Richardson the leader, Mary the stock room girl and Nikki the orphan. Of course their are a few more but those were my favorites.

I also really loved the world building. Even though the book goes through two time jumps I never felt starved for information and the beginning while very fast paced was set up perfectly. I only wish we could of seen one or two scenes during Aarons formative years before the time jump to him being 14. A toddler in a Zombie world would be interesting. I wonder also if maybe his father knew about Aaron's condition even before he did and that's why he kept him protected in the woods so much.

Speaking of the Zombies they were great! I love the idea of Thinkers and that even though the other Zombies were dumb as corpses ( no pun intended) they could be "taught" to do basic skills such as pulling rope off doors, turning doorknobs or even climbing chairs to get up to survivors hiding out of reach. This made them scarier in my book and also added another element to them that I haven't really seen before. Sure I've seen smart zombies but never ones who could teach the normal ones to do stuff. It's usually either they're all smart or all dumb no real in between.

Overall I really have no complaints with Dead Living. While I went into this book focusing on the Zombie aspect I can truly say that upon completion Dead Living is so much more than just a Zombie book. The characters have depth, the story a soul and the writing is top notch. I highly recommend picking up Dead Living and giving it a shot. Whether new to the genre or a seasoned fan Dead Living is a great book that will leave you wanting more. I really hope this isn't a stand alone and that we'll see more in this world in the future. That is why in the end, I will be rating Dead Living by Glenn Bullion ★★★★★.

I live in Maryland with my wonderful wife and four cats. I love gaming, computer technology, movies, and of course, reading and writing. I love science fiction and especially horror and the paranormal. Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, anything supernatural, all beautiful subjects.

I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old. There’s just something about creating a story that I like. I always try come up with something that hasn’t been done, or is unique in some way. It could be someone with demonic powers, or something much more simple, such as a person that zombies ignore. It’s fun to create a character, give him or her a personality and background, and watch them evolve through a story.

I’ve tried other subjects, but always drift back to horror and paranormal. There’s a reason why we keep going back to horror movies and books, why they’ve made fifty Friday the 13th movies. People like to be scared, but more than that, I think paranormal and horror stir the imagination like nothing else. We’re all just a little nervous to open that closet door at midnight, or look under the bed.

    1. It's a really good book. I'm sad to learn it is a stand alone as I feel the story has more to tell.

    2. Eh it might not be a stand alone novel. :) I've got a few ideas I might tackle, all involving a return to the world run by corpses.
