Mini Review: Stonefall by Dene Bebbington

Author: Dene Bebbington
Genre: Horror, Gargoyles,
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: July 23, 2014

Stonefall tells the story of a group of students assigned to make a mockumentary. They choose the eerie half-built Woodchester Mansion as their base and set out to emulate the paranormal programmes they had seen on TV, with one of their group providing sound effects. It isn't long before they begin to realise why the Mansion was half-built, it is haunted and they are not prepared in any way for the horrors which spring to life because of their invasion...

Mini Review
When I was asked to read Stonefall by the Author I went into it thinking it would be a quick, fun, read featuring Gargoyles. Considering the Novellas length I never thought it would be as complete a story as it ended up being. Not only does Stonefall have character development and world building befitting a full length novel but it also blended together humor and horror so well that I could easily see this being made into a TV movie. I know I for one would watch it!

Now, while I enjoyed Stonefall, the only thing that kept me from rating it a full 5 Stars was the ending. While I certainly understand what the Author was trying to achieve writing it the way they did, for me personally, it felt not only a bit rushed but predictable as well. However, I watch and read a lot of Horror (since it is my favorite genre) so maybe the predictability of it for me is based on that. If you're someone who doesn't dally into the genre often this ending might be totally satisfying for you so do take my sole negative concerning the novella with that in mind.

Final Thoughts
Despite the slightly disappointing ending I'm genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed Stonefall. The writing was great and the story certainly left room for a sequel should the Author decide to write one. Overall, I really have very little to complain about regarding this Novella. I highly recommend picking this one up if you get the chance.

With that being said, I'll be rating Stonefall by Dene Bebbington .
