Zurvival Saturday (31)

For this week's Zurvival Saturday I will be reviewing The Walking Dead Volume 1 by Robert Kirkman

A few week's back I did a comparison of The Walking Dead comics vs TV ( Click Here to Read ) and it was only while looking for something I wrote in that post that I realized that I hadn't actually reviewed this yet. So here it is my review of The Walking Dead Vol.1 Days Gone Bye.

Publication Date: September 26,2006
The Walking Dead

An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

I was provided a copy of this book to review through Netgalley. All opinions included in this review are my own and I was not compensated in any way for providing them.

Review:

I admit I am a late reader to The Walking Dead comics even though I know nearly everything that has taken place within them. When I saw that Netgalley had The Walking Dead Vol.1 up for review I seized the opportunity to see what the comics were all about. Let me tell you, my experience reliving the events in comic form was every bit as enjoyable as watching it on the show for the very first time. Since I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead I tend to get a little over enthusiastic when describing the series, so please bear with me.

The Writing- The events in the comics unfold close to the show but with enough differences that it still leaves you curious which direction it is actually headed.

The Characters- I loved seeing more of the character Glenn it was great seeing him treated like an invaluable member to the group rather than just a glorified gopher. The Shane/Lori relationship on the other hand fell flat for me. I didn't think Comic Shane deserved what happened and that whole event felt thrown in just for shock value. I wholeheartedly believe the relationship and how it evolves on the show is much more enjoyable. Speaking of Comic Lori her character almost managed to make me feel sympathetic to her situation upon Rick returning. I certainly don't feel that way towards her in the show so this was a pleasant surprise.

The Zombies- Gory goodness at their best. I really have no complaints how the Zombies were introduced, drawn or behaved in the comics. Credit to both the artist and the writer.

No Dixons- I wasn't going to mention this because I knew full well they weren't in the comics but actually reading the events that transpire in the comics without them made me sad. I won't go so far to say don't read the comics because of this after all the story was still good it just definitely was lacking a little something without them.

Overall The Walking Dead Vol. 1 is as near perfection as one can expect from a comic. I love these characters nearly every bit as much as their on screen counterparts and can now see why people choose to read the comics in addition to watching the show. The comics for better and worse offer some really great insight to the characters that just can't be portrayed on screen. I highly recommend you pick this up and give it a shot. I will be rating The Walking Dead Vol. 1 Days Gone Bye ★★★★★.
