Dear Diary: Confessions From A Blogger (1)

I've realized over the past year blogging that I have some pretty weird rituals and quirks when blogging/reading books. I've often wondered if maybe others did to. While I might talk about them on Twitter I never really sat down and wrote about it for my blog. Dear Diary: Confessions From A Blogger stems from that curiosity. While I suppose I'm writing these mainly for my own amusement I am generally interested in what others think so comments, questions, are welcome and encouraged! Let's get to it shall we!

Here is my confession:

Ever since I was little whenever I considered purchasing a book I'd skip to the last page first and read it. I've done this as far back as I can remember much to the annoyance of family and friends and above all librarians and shopkeepers. "You're ruining the book for yourself." they would say. "What's the point of buying/borrowing now?" they would ask. Usually I'd just reply with a shrug of the shoulders and a mumbled "I don't know." Call it a quirk or compulsion but I love guessing how events play out based on that last page read. Sometimes I'm wrong but more often than not I'm right. Almost always I pick up the book anyway.

You can learn a lot from a book reading the last page. Will the book end on a high or low note? Will it be a cliffhanger? Does everyone die? It also lets me know if I'm wanting to invest in characters. Will my favorite people be in peril at the end? Have they declared themselves sworn lovers or enemies? Yup, I don't feel guilty one bit reading the last page first. It adds to the enjoyment of the book for me, a layer of mystery if you will.

Now that being said I've realized I never skip to the end with E-books. I don't know why either so if you ask I have no real answer, sorry. Put a physical book in my hands and I'm flipping to the last page first thing but if that same book is in e-form I start it from page 1 no peeking whatsoever. Weird, I know.

So Here are my questions for this week:

Do you ever read the last page first? Have you ever wanted to? Answer for fun: Why do you think I don't peek with e-books? Leave your responses in the comments below, I love reading them. Have a question? Leave that as well and I'll try and answer it.

That about wraps up this weeks confessions from a blogger. I'm not sure if this will be a weekly, monthly, bi-weekly post yet. For now I'm leaning towards weekly but will see how it goes. Thanks for stopping by and reading, sharing or commenting on this post. As always it is appreciated.

  1. I do the same thing! And for the same, too! I want to see how things will end. And like you said, that necessarily doesn't mean that you're spoiling it for yourself--you're just curious. And with the e-books, I think that it's because you can't physically see all the pages. When you've got a physical book, it's easy to see the end and flip to those last pages. I dunno. That's just my guess.
    Cheers!

    1. Exactly! That is also a good point regarding why I don't peek with E-books.

  2. This is funny, I think you don't peak with ebooks because its hard to keep track of where you've been if it thinks you've already read the whole book when using "sync to the last page read". It may be a pain or more difficult to get to the last page of an e-book, the effort put forth may not be worth it. As for a real book its very simple to get to the last page.

As for do I, personally, ever skip to the last page - nope for me it would ruin the entire story. It would demotivate me to ever finish.

    1. True...

It's funny reading others opinions on this. Thanks for answering!

  3. I would imagine you don't read the last page of your ebooks, because you are not physically tempted to. When you are holding a physical book, its automatic to flip through the pages a little. I don't read the last page, but I do flip to the last page to check the page count of the book. I never read anything other than the little # in the corner. Not sure why I do that, either! Just one of those things!

  4. I should admit, though, that I will sometimes flip in the middle somewhere and read a paragraph. But never the ending!

    1. Yes, I think that is it.

      Thanks for the input!

  5. I NEVER flip to the last page. BUT, I do have a tendency to spot something on the page across from what I'm reading, skim to get to that point and then have to go back and re-read for comprehension. Sometimes, I have to cover the next page completely if I have a sense that something major is about to happen.
