Dear Diary: Confessions From A Blogger (11) Disappointment

We all know what goes on behind the scenes at our own blogs but rarely do we lift the curtain and share those experiences with others. Dear Diary: Confessions From A Blogger stems from the curiosity. This week I want to talk about disappointment.

Here is my Confession:

Lately I've been feeling a bit down in the dumps. It seems many books I've been waiting to read have turned out less than stellar upon completion. Mostly I've been disappointed these books hadn't lived up to expectations.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't expected to love every book I read but the rate at which I'm not enjoying this years books is almost alarming. I don't think I've ever had so many books one right after the other stay in the firmly good category. I've even admittedly put off reading some sequels just to delay my disappointed.

So what do you do when every book feels like a rehash of the previous one? I've found I've needed to make a complete about face in how I deal with books. One of the first things I've started doing is I pick a book from my personal collection that I've had 0 expectations with to read. This helps when I start feeling a pattern of disappointment with my review pile. I've also started trying to mix up the order of books I'm currently reading so I'm not doing the same genre one right after the other. Both of these simple fixes have helped me greatly and stopped that burnout feeling from creeping up.

Of course like most things all disappointment is not created equal. What happens when the disappointment isn't with the content of the book but the cover or in a recent case the title? Well for covers, If I'm really strongly opposed to it I'll seek out a cover I do like from another country and have it shipped. I refuse to stare at a cover I hate no matter how much I love the book. As for titles.... well.... not much one can do about that unfortunately. Sometimes you just have to suck it up. You can't always get what you want and all that. If a title is really all that's stopping you from reading a book, no matter how disappointing or in the case of another recent redo supposedly confusing then you know what get over it. Pick your battles wisely. Is a badly titled book disappointing? Sure. However, should it stop you from even reading a book? No and once you realize this it makes the whole reading experience that much more enjoyable. Rant, gripe, then move on. Nobody like a negative Nancy 24/7 even if they agree with you at least that is how I see it.

Now that you've read my confession, Tell me some of yours:

How do you deal with disappointment?
Have you ever not read a book based on a bad title?
What's the last book you've read that's been disappointing?

Leave your responses in the comments below, I love reading them. Have a question? Leave that as well and I'll try and answer it.

  1. First of all, *hugs* Book disappointments are the worst. They make me so sad. I get in 'slumps' from time to time, and that can be the fault of the book or me needing to switch things up a bit. I usually just read a book or two from a different genre, and that seems to help. Last week, I realized I couldn't handle any more books set in high school for a while; so I'm reading about a MC who is in her 30's. Really seems to be helping. I depend heavily on my best book buddies. They always know just what I need, and I have complete trust in them when they rec a book to me. I'm not one to turn down a book based on the title or cover - though I am quick to pick one up because it catches my eye. I think we all go through these disappointments and have to remember that reading should be done for pleasure. No negative Nancy's, please! I hope your run of book bad luck ends soon. Great post! Thanks for sharing :)

    1. Aww thanks. I've had some hits lately so they haven't been all bad. Still I don't think I'm close to how many hits I had last year. I try not to dwell though either a book will be good or bad. They can't always be winners.

  2. Book letdowns - hate them. But what can we do? Not every book can be perfect no matter how awesome that would be. No wait, it wouldn't be awesome! We NEED bad and average books in order to have standouts. I just hope your next book will be an outstanding read! *fingers crossed* :)

Btw, I honestly don't care that much about titles/covers. As long the story inside is good I'm good.

    1. Oh gosh I think it would be boring if I loved every single book I read. I agree!
