Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

Review

Gripping, original and filled with pulse pounding action Reboot was filled with everything I could hope  for in a book and then some. I loved this book. In fact, I'm calling this a must read of 2013 and here's why:

The Characters- Wren is a soldier, she's a cold blood killing machine devoid of everything that makes her Human. Yet, she's written with a vulnerability, a childlike innocence even, just lingering under the surface waiting to break free. Wren is completely unique in the fact she's a hero. She's kicking ass taking names and doing it with a song in her heart. She's also pretty much indestructible the only thing able to kill her or any Reboot for that matter is decapitation or a bullet in the brain. Then there's Callum. Unlike Wren he isn't a cold heartless killer. His Reboot number is very low. He makes Wren question her entire existence and you cannot deny the sexual chemistry that he has with her. Callum might not be the best soldier but he is the best thing for Wren and that's what matters.  I also loved Ever Wren's roommate. Being with Wren for so long you could tell they were close. While Wren is practically devoid of emotion you can feel that Ever brings out the humanity in her. I don't even think Wren realizes how much Ever has the ability to change her behavior. Of course this just makes events later in the book that much more heartbreaking.

The World Building- I love the details that went into crafting the world. The Reboot hierarchy is fascinating to say the least. The concept of a Reboot and it's place in society reminded me greatly of a little french film called Les Revenants except with a Terminatoresque type twist. In the span of 225 pages we learn so much not only about the characters (minor and major) but also the reasoning behind why the human population fears those that have Rebooted. We also learn about why Wren is considered special as a 178 vs. Callum who is a 22.

The Writing- Considering Reboot is a Debut I am impressed. I never felt a lull in the story and the pacing was pitch perfect. Each characters voice was unique and I never lost track of who was speaking.  I really have no complaints.

Overall, I really loved Reboot. It is one that will stick with me for quite some time. I truly hope it has a sequel. I'm not done with the world or the characters and based on the ending I'm taking it as a sign the Author isn't either. Would I recommend Reboot? Yes, yes, yes!! Mark your calendars ladies and gents this is one you'll want to pick up the moment it releases. I'm calling it now Reboot is going to end up on many Best of lists. I have no doubt in my mind readers will love this one as much as I did. That being said, I'll be rating Reboot by Amy Tintera ★★★★★.
