Armchair BEA: Comics & Graphic Novels

Image
Design credit: Nina of Nina Reads Today I want to talk about Comics and Graphic Novels. I know many readers don't think of them as "books" but really they aren't different at all. Think of them as picture books for adults. You have your Graphic Novels that are series long and generally follow the same main characters and then you have comics which are Novellas/ short stories set in a particular world but can follow anyone.  See I told you they were similar. It is just all about perception. Something I've noticed about people who don't read Graphic Novels or Comics is they think they are for kids only. This is simply not true. You can find them in a variety of genres covering a wide variety of subjects.  Did you know, most Classic books have a Comic or Graphic novel version? You can find the likes of Jane Eyre, Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo all in Graphic Novel or Comic form.  One thing I really love about Graphic Novels and Comics is the ability t...

Armchair Bea Day 5: Keeping It Fresh & Children's Literature

Image
Design credit: Sarah of Puss Reboots Keeping things fresh This is a tricky question isn't it? On one hand I feel like I need to constantly be creative to "hook" new readers and on the other I want to do what makes me happy. This need for balance between keeping myself and my readers happy is precisely how my Dear Diary: Confessions From A Blogger posts came about. I wanted to talk about a few topics but I didn't just want to have them be at random. Also I felt I needed something new to keep myself challenged and growing as a blogger and that meant tackling tough topics head on.  Since my first "confession" where I talked about Reading Quirks I've had quite a few E-mails from readers thanking me for my posts or expressing how they felt about a topic in confidence. At first I was put off that I was getting more E-mails than comments but I eventually decided whether or not they comment doesn't matter to me. Not everyone feels confident talking...

Armchair BEA- Non-Fiction

Image
Design credit: Sarah of Puss Reboots When it comes to Non-Fiction I actually do tend to read quite a bit of it. Since I was a young child I've read dozens of books focusing on plagues and zoonotic diseases. I find the subject matter fascinating and of course anyone who knows me can see the direct correlation between those and my love of Zombies as well. Some of my  favorites include: One of my all time favorite Non-Fiction books on the subject is called The Hot Zone. If you've never read it you're missing out. The book is an eye opening account of what could happen if a deadly virus escaped amongst the populace. Think Stephen King's The Stand or Robin Cook's Outbreak except you know this time it is real. In the same vein as books about diseases and plagues I  also tend to gravitate toward Non-Fiction books based on Disasters. Although don't you dare try to put Alive in this list. I loathe that book with a fiery vengeance. Being forced to read it ...

Armchair BEA- Literary Fiction

Image
Design credit: Sarah of Puss Reboots   Today we've been asked to talk about Literary Fiction. While I read tons of books, Literary Fiction usually isn't among them. I tend to think of Literary Fiction as a stuffier version of a Contemporary novel and since I don't really read Contemporary you can see why I might not gravitate to Literary Fiction. However, as I stated yesterday during the Genre Fiction post, If  it sounds interesting I'll read it. This year I haven't read many books that I personally believe fit the Literary Fiction title although I have read at least one. The title was called The Wall and it is one of the most heartbreaking yet uplifting and telling stories I've ever read. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if The Wall became a classic along the lines of The Kite Runner (which if you haven't read you should). The story was great and I would highly recommend it. If you want to read my review on this title click here . Now, If ...
